Butterflies conjure up some of the best memories of childhood. But
Real estate development, pesticides, pollution, and the decline of protective groves all threaten to make the Monarch butterfly just that, a memory. The fact is most butterfly species are declining, some of them very rapidly. That’s worrying. Not just because we’re heading towards summers without butterflies, but also because these declines can indicate an underlying deterioration of the environment.

But the simple act of planting a garden can help save the butterfly. When you create a butterfly garden you will create a pocket of wonder, as well as a sanctuary for the butterfly, and for you too.  There is a connection between your garden, your unique creation, and the butterfly that finds a home there.

Creating a butterfly garden is easy. The butterfly’s favorite blooms are the sweetest, most colorful ones. Their main food is nectar from flowers and the best way to attract them to your home garden is to plant their favorites in large groupings. As far as butterflies are concerned there can never be too many flowers! Make sure your garden produces nectar flowers all through the season so they can always find food. Butterfly gardens are generally planted in sunny locations. In fact butterflies need to bask in the sun to warm themselves for flight. A flat stone in full sun will do the trick. It is important to keep your garden in an area protected from wind and refrain from using harmful chemicals.
